Empathize, Define & Ideate
My Role
I was the UX researcher and designer of the app and responsive website from inception to delivery. I really enjoyed conducting interviews and the usability study to get a sense of the target user, their needs, and preferences.
Project goal
Help users improve their emotional awareness and self-regulation, build their self-confidence and display empathy to have more successful relationships.
Target audience
Children, ages 5 to 10
Key challenges and constraints
I was required to design an app and then a responsive website for this assignment. It was a challenge to redesign the app according to mobile and desktop conventions and constraints, all the while maintaining a cohesive look and feel between devices.
Research study details
I asked interview questions about the kind of technology participants use, their opinions about learning new/challenging things, and the potential benefits of learning about emotions. All interview participants expressed interest in using an app/website designed to help them understand, regulate and express their emotions and support friendships.
“I feel like it’s good to learn about feelings because you can learn to manage them.
Then when you have the feelings, you might overreact if you don’t know how to manage them.” - Interview Participant

So I added labels to clarify navigation
Final Thoughts
From this project, I learned how essential user research - including interviews and usability studies - is to each step of the design process. User feedback informed each design iteration; remaining user focused helped me to make appropriate visual design choices. Adapting All the Feels to different device sizes really emphasized the importance of prioritizing responsive design.
Possible next steps
1. Conduct research on how successful the All the Feels app is at supporting children to improve their emotional awareness and self-regulation, build their self-confidence and display empathy

2. Consult with educators, psychologists and other experts to develop evidence-based content and resources for users

3. Provide incentives and rewards for consistent use of the All the Feels app
